The Danish government has introduced an Acholi Education Initiative to offer scholarships to 200 Acholi students joining secondary education

The Danish government has introduced an Acholi Education Initiative to offer scholarships to 200 Acholi students joining secondary education, reports Fortunate Ahimbisibwe.

Kitgum Diocese Retired Bishop Markleord Ochola said the initiative targets students from the war-torn region that has been disrupted by the Kony rebellion.

“Our children have been disrupted by the insurgency caused by the rebellion. Their education has been compromised. Most of them have become orphans and cannot afford school fees.

We are happy that the Danish government has sympathised with us. The initiative will benefit Acholi children who have been affected by the war,” he said.

He was recently addressing the Annual Acholi Conference at Africa Hall, Makerere University.

The conference attracted political, traditional leaders and the Acholi living in Kampala.

The sh300m scholarship fund covers five years. Ochola said the initiative would attract children from the districts of Gulu, Kitgum and Pader. It is expected to begin next year.

“The children who have completed primary seven and cannot afford secondary education will benefit from this initiative,” Ochola said. The project was recently launched in Gulu.
