By Douglas Mazune UGANDA Telecom Limited (UTL) intends to have its golf tournament due this weekend, elevated to Uganda Golf Union (UGU) status next year. UTL telecel commercial director Hans Paulsen yesterday said they hope to make their tournament a union event. “We are putting in more money this year and hope it evolves into a union event so that upcountry players are also involved,” Hans said at the launch of the tournament at Uganda Golf Club (UGC). Hans said UTL has injected sh20m in the 36-holes tournament that will take place at the par-72 Kitante course. “In a bid to make this year’s tournament a better one we have increased the financial package by 60 percent and committed to making the tournament among the most prestigious ones on the golf calendar,” Hans said. Over 150 players including guests are expected to compete in the UGC organised event. Meanwhile, women golfers from Kenya and Dubai have shown interest in the 2001 edition of Uganda Ladies Open championship scheduled for September 28-30 at Kitante. Uganda Ladies Golf Union (ULGU) president Monica Ntege said they have invited several international women golfers for the Caltex Oil sponsored event. The 54-hole tournament will also have a two-day subsidiary event for ladies above handicap 20 and men. ends
