OVER 900 people in Zesui sub-county, Sironko district have been left homeless and hungry after landslides swept away their crops, houses and other belongings following heavy rains.

By Arthur Wamanga OVER 900 people in Zesui sub-county, Sironko district have been left homeless and hungry after landslides swept away their crops, houses and other belongings following heavy rains. Stephen Wamukota, the Area Red Cross Field Officer said the incident occurred on October 8 in the hilly and densely populated parishes of Buboolo and Bufupa. He said 250 families had been affected, and the total number of persons affected was 978. “An assessment report was sent to our Kampala Red Cross headquarters for assistance,” Wamukota said. He added, “Blankets, utensils, seeds, food and polythene sheeting for shelter are needed to rescue the situation.” According to the assessment report, some of the affected people were being hosted by fellow members of the community. The road leading to both parishes was covered with heavy stones and soils. Red Cross volunteers in Sironko and Mbale districts have been mobilised to assist in delivering relief items. The Sironko Resident District Commissioner, Higenyi Kalyebi, and the District Internal Security Officer, Daniel Kagoda, visited the scene.
