The maternal mortality rate in Gulu stands at about 700 deaths per 100,000 live births, compared to Uganda’s 506 deaths per 100,000 live births.
The district director of health services, Dr. Paul Onek, said, “Losing a mother, as a result of pregnancy or delivery is happening at a very high rate in Gulu, compared to other districts.â€
He said in October, there were over five maternal deaths in the health units, excluding cases in the community. Onek cited the commonest causes of maternal deaths as obstructed labour, bleeding and infection.
