THE retired Anglican bishop of Northern Uganda diocese, Gideon Allan Oboma, has urged Ugandans to emulate the late Alipayo Oloya by desisting from corruption practising honesty, truthfulness and humility.

He said corruption was draining the economy and deterring development.

Oboma was speaking at a burial of Alipayo Oloya, a renowned teacher in Alero sub-county in Nwoya district on Saturday.

‘Lwanymoi’, as he was referred to was father of Opiyo Oloya, New Vision’s Canada-based columnist.

The late Oloya qualified as a teacher from Buwalasi Teachers’ College, he taught in Lira and Kitgum districts. He also served as a member of the Acholi district land board and was a member of the Dairy Corporation before he retired as a farmer. He died in Gulu Hospital on January 24, at the age of 90.

Oboma called upon the bereaved family to have love, trust, be united and keep the hard work of Oloya.

“Oloya was a church choir member, Anglican believer, a farmer and a model father in Acholi sub-region loved his work and always did it diligently and perfectly,” Oboma said.

Luka Aber, a family friend, described Oloya as a humble man, who never liked members of the family to go begging.

Justice Ralph Ocan described Oloya as an exemplary and inspirational man and urged the Acholi to follow his way of life.

“I knew Mzee Oloya as a good father. He never segregated his children or wives and anyone in the clan. He was the light of Acholi,” Ocan said.
