THE Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has started upgrading 10,000km of district roads in 22 districts.

The UNRA head of corporate communications, Dan Alinange, made the disclosure during a press briefing at the Uganda Journalist Association offices in Kampala yesterday.

He said sh150b would be spent on upgrading and repairing the gravel roads that the authority took over from districts last year.

The beneficiary districts include Luwero, Kampala, Mpigi, Masaka, Mubende, Kabale, Kasese, Mbarara, Kabarole, Hoima and Masindi.

Others are Lira, Gulu, Kitgum, Moyo, Arua, Jinja, Tororo, Mbale, Soroti, Moroto and Kotido.

In a separate interview, Alinange said repair works were underway on the 15km Busabala Road off the Entebbe Road in Wakiso district.

Money for the work is being provided by the Road Fund. “We cannot wait for this year’s budgetary allocations. By the time it comes, we shall have gone a long way,” he said.

Alinange explained that 100 local companies contracted to undertake the road works had started work in some districts as the authority waits for the money allocated for road construction in this year’s budget.

Each contractor, he added, had been awarded two to three roads to expedite the works on the roads that connect various districts and serve as a link to neighbouring countries.

Alinange said all district roads would be upgraded to national standard, adding that UNRA would only pay the companies for the completed works.

He said the road works were expected to be completed in one year since the work will be handled concurrently by different companies.

Alinange said the companies found to have done shoddy work or failed to complete the projects in time would be penalised.

He added that UNRA would supervise the road works to ensure value for money.

“The problem with our local contractors is lack of project management and diverting the funds to womanising and buying cars. But we are not going to allow this to happen this time,” Alinange said.

Some of the companies that have been contracted to do the road repair works include Multiplex, Valley Technical Services, Marvel Contractors and Road Maintenance and Continuum Engineering.

Others are LB Construction, Robin Contractors, Assured Engineering Services and Suuza Construction.
