Late Philly Bongoley Lutaaya, who we regard as one of the best musician that Uganda has ever produced was no saint.

During the 1980s, he too pinched songs. We love Philly Lutaaya and his music and also probably regard him as the greatest musician that Uganda has ever produced.

He was a trailblazer who gave HIV/AIDS a human face by declaring a vision of openness. When Swedish group, Roxette, released It Must Have Been Love in 1990, the verses sounded like they were pinched from Lutaaya’s Alone and Frightened.

In fact, it was Lutaaya who was guilty. Shocking? I guess so. This is why: Roxette first released their song as a Christmas song under the title Christmas for the Broken-hearted in 1987.

Although he was a very good song writer, earlier on he had also lifted one of the Abba’s Christmas songs and turned it into a Luganda hit Anindiridde.
