A new quarry, Dura limestone quarry in Kamwenge district has boosted Hima Cement production capacity from 350,000 metric tonnes to 850,000, a top official indicated last week.

Allen Mate, the plant manager, noted that the development would move the country towards self-sufficiency in cement production.

Hima Cement got a license to mine limestone from Dura query to feed its new factory in Kasese district.

Mate pointed out that the Dura limestone reserves, in use since the 1950s, would enable the production of over 500,000 tonnes of cement annually for the next 25 years.

“It means we are assured of raw materials for the next 25 years,” Mate said during an open and engagement day between Hima and communities in Ngoma village in Kamwenge district.
