Biography

Mubarak Munyagwa aka Mugati Gwa Bata (buttered bread) has also announced plans to unseat President Yoweri Museveni from power come January 2026.

The former Kawempe South Member of Parliament and acting Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) secretary for mobilisation, Mubarak, was mid-July 2025 sworn in as the leader of the Common Man’s Party, formerly the Uganda Economic Party.

“History has a notorious habit of repeating itself. This conclave here has anointed me to take on the mantle to liberate the common man. I have been in the struggle to liberate the common man for 25 years,” he said.

The 46-year-old politician made the remarks during the launch of the party at Jacaranda Gardens in Rubaga, Kampala, on July 15, 2025.

His rebranded party, which was initially registered on December 14, 2004, and is yet to be gazetted by the Electoral Commission, has been dormant.

Its official symbol is Lusaniya (Luganda word for platter), which its leaders say symbolises the principle of equality, where everyone benefits from the same system.

Some of the Common Man’s party’s notable leaders are former Busoga region National Unity Platform party co-ordinator Moses Bigirwa, who was sworn in as secretary general and former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Kawempe North parliamentary candidate Muhamood Mutazindwa aka Sweet Cake.

Munyagwa gained his experience in the murky political waters of Kawempe division in Kampala, where he served as mayor before joining Parliament in 2016 on the Forum for Democratic Change party ticket.

He is largely known for his comical character in political activism during the “walk to work” opposition protests that started following the general election in February 2011.

The protests were against the rising food and fuel prices in the country. Munyagwa was among the politicians who were hauled up and jailed for allegedly holding unlawful protests and destabilising the peace of Ugandans in Kampala.

In Parliament, he was also appointed the chairperson of the committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises, thereby getting the chance to hog the limelight during inquiries.

According to the directory of the 10th Parliament, Munyagwa has a diploma in law from the Uganda Development Centre, which he got in 2014. He went to Kitagwenda High School for O’level and Nakasero Secondary School for A’level, completing in 1996 and 1999, respectively. He sat for his primary leaving examination at Mahyoro Primary School in 1992.
