Uganda ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations (UN) Adonia Ayebare has met three of his fellow UN envoys over the work of the G77+China and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

The UN ambassadors Ayebare met at Uganda House in New York separately are Zhang Jun of China, Maurizio Massari of Italy, and Egriselda Aracely of El Salvador.

China is not a member of G77 but has been supporting and cooperating with the bloc under the framework of “G77 and China”.

Ayebare took to X, formerly Twitter, on Friday (March 15) and said it was a pleasure hosting Jun.

“We had a productive meeting that covered issues of common interests like the work of G77 and China, Non-aligned Movement, the negotiations of the future pact,” Ayebare said.

At the meeting with Maurizio, he said: “We discussed potential cooperation between the Italian G7 presidency and Uganda’s chairmanship of G77 in particular reform of global governance institutions.

And on hosting Egriselda, Ayebare said he had a cordial and productive meeting with her.

“We discussed the work of the G77 and China and how to advance common interests in the ongoing UN processes and negotiations.”

Uganda asserted its global presence at the NAM and G77+ China summits, which ran back-to-back at Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort Hotel in Kampala from January 15 to 22, 2024.

It was the first time Uganda was hosting a large number of world leaders at the same time and the summits saw it assume the NAM leadership for three years and the G77+China for one year.

NAM is the largest grouping of states worldwide after the UN while the G77+China is the largest intergovernmental organization of developing countries in this universal global organization (UN).

As chair of the two organisations, Uganda, which is a key player and a power broker in the East African region, is expected to coordinate positions of member countries towards major international issues, to strengthen their negotiating power vis-a-vis the developed countries.
