UN chief Guterres to address 19th NAM Summit in Kampala

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres will address the 19th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on Saturday as the week-long edition concludes.

The UN chief landed in Uganda Friday night aboard a Brussels Airlines plane, just in time for the final day of the summit, which has been going on since Monday in Munyonyo in Uganda's capital Kampala.

Guterres, who has served at the helm of the UN since 2017, is set to also attend the Third South Summit of the G77+China that is also being hosted by Uganda.

Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni is now the chair of the NAM, having officially taken on the mantle on Friday from Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev during the meeting of NAM heads of state and government at Speke Resort Munyonyo.

Aliyev was not physically in Kampala but he was represented by his foreign affairs minister, Jeyhun Bayramov, who handed Museveni the symbolic mallet signalling the transition.

Museveni will also assume leadership of the G77+China coalition.

Meanwhile, at Entebbe International Airport on Friday, UN chief Guterres was received by Uganda's Third Deputy Prime Minister, Rukia Isanga Nakadama, in the presence of Uganda's Permanent Secretary to the UN, Amb. Adonia Ayebare.

At this NAM Summit that draws to end later today, Ayebare was elected the chairman of the NAM senior officials meeting while foreign affairs minister Gen (rtd) Jeje Odongo became chair of the forum's ministerial meeting.

Foreign affairs ministry permanent secretary, Vincent Bagiire Waiswa, was elected the chairman of the senior officials meeting of the G77+China Summit, which officially gets under way on Sunday and closes on Monday.

Today (Saturday) will see the continuation of the plenary session of the heads of state and government and heads of delegation at Munyonyo, during which statements will be made by the delegations.

Later in the day, UN chief Guterres will deliver his address during the plenary session, which will also have statements presented by participating delegations.

The closing ceremony of the 19th NAM Summit is scheduled to start in the evening, a session open to observer countries and observer organizations.

During the closing ceremony, addresses will be made by representatives of the regional groups comprising the NAM: African Region, Asia-Pacific Region, Latin America and the Carribean Region and the European Region.

There will be a closed session for the adoption of the final documents of the 19th NAM Summit by the heads of state and government (limited to member states).

President Museveni, the current chair of the 19th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the NAM will then deliver his closing statement.
