The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, Ben Kumumanya, has praised Mpanga Market in Fort Portal city for its significant role in improving livelihoods, driving economic growth, and enhancing community welfare.

During a visit to the fully occupied market, as well as other local development projects on Monday, January 13, 2025, Kumumanya underscored the market’s vital contribution to the success of the Parish Development Model (PDM) by linking farmers to ready markets for their produce.

Addressing market vendors and local leaders, Kumumanya expressed his commitment to collaborating with city authorities to resolve challenges faced by the vendors. He reiterated the government’s dedication to supporting local businesses.

“Modern markets like Mpanga are key to fostering economic stability and promoting development nationwide,” he said.

He further called for collective efforts to ensure that Mpanga Market continues to serve as a beacon of progress and opportunity for the region.

Vendors at the market expressed their appreciation for the government’s investment in the facility, noting the positive impact it has had on their businesses. They highlighted that the well-organised environment has significantly boosted trade and improved their working conditions.

Mpanga Market, which boasts 600 stalls, 200 shops, and 400 pitches, is the largest in Fort Portal City.

Constructed in 2013 with funding from the African Development Bank, it was part of the first phase of the Markets and Agricultural Trade Improvement Program (MATIP).
