NUP's Nalubowa runs to High Court after Nameere vote recount victory

National Unity Platform's candidate for the Masaka District Woman Member of Parliament Rose Nalubowa has run to the High Court in Masaka challenging the outcome of the vote recount.
The controversial recount ordered by Masaka Chief Magistrate Abert Asiimwe saw the ruling National Resistance Movement party's Justine Nameere declared victorious, overturning Nalubowa's earlier victory in the January 15, 2026, election.
In a petition filed at the High Court through her lawyers, led by Samuel Muyizzi, Nalubowa is seeking a nullification of Asiimwe's order for a vote recount, overturning of the victory and eventual nullification of her victory. In the petition, the lawyers argue that one of the ballot boxes' seals was broken.
The contentious recount that lasted three days saw Nameere garner 25,502 votes, Nalubowa get 23,176 votes; Democratic Front's candidate Juliet Kakande get 6,136, and independent candidate Sauya Nanyonga get 5,921.
During the recount, over five ballot boxes were found to have appeared tampered with, according to Asiimwe.
A certificate of vote recount signed by Asiimwe was given to Nameere as the winner late Sunday, February 1, 2026, night, overturning an earlier declaration in favour of Nalubowa.
