Awany announced Nwoya Woman MP as EC cancels results in two polling stations

NWOYA - National Resistance Movement (NRM) party candidate Christine Lanyero Awany has been declared the winner of the Nwoya District Woman Member of Parliament seat after garnering 12,715 votes.

Lanyero beat incumbent Judith Peace Acan, who ran as an Independent Candidate who got 6,866 votes. In third position is Democratic Party candidate Rosemary Laker, who obtained 3,236 votes.

Others are Cinderella Joy Acellam Apili (Uganda People’s Congress) with 767 votes, Vicky Tina Laker (independent) with 469 votes and Jennifer Atim Ogaba (Democratic Front) with 294 valid votes.

In the Nwoya County Member of Parliament race, incumbent Tony Awany of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party lost to the Democratic Party’s Dennis Geoffrey Opiyo in a tight race with 5,022 against 5,044 votes.

Opiyo is the incumbent LC5 councillor for Anaka sub-county. He also trounced incumbent Nwoya district chairperson Emmanuel Orach, who came third in the race with 2,029 votes, followed by Ocitti Onyai (UPC) with 372 votes.

Democratic Front Party candidate Kennedy Okello collected a total of 259 votes, while the Forum for Democratic Change Party candidate Samuel Opiyo closed with 174 votes, as People’s Front for Freedom Party candidate Alfred Okello Otti (PFF) trailed with 84 votes.

Nwoya East

In Nwoya East County, the Democratic Party’s Geoffrey Charles Okello aka Komlok, comfortably retained his seat with 4,249 votes, beating the National Resistance Movement party’s Lilly Adong, who polled 3,624 votes.

Other candidates included Patrick Akena Candano (Independent), who closed the race with 3,057 votes, as Nelson Oyet Ojok (independent) obtained 121 votes.

Forum for Democratic Change party candidate Moses Chankara Mwaka achieved 96 votes, while the breakaway party People’s Front for Freedom party’s Brian Rwotomiya garnered just 52 votes.

Results cancelled

Results from two polling stations in Alero Sub – County namely Lanyang Junction and Cuk pa Opuk were cancelled by the Electoral Commission following allegations of malpractices there.

Several tallies discovered that the number of votes cast at the two polling stations was more than the number of registered voters in each of them.

Although Lanyang Junction had only 560 registered voters, up to 781 votes were returned from the Station. Similarly, at Cuk pa Opuk Polling station, up to 507 votes were returned against the only 243 registered voters.
