ANKARA - In efforts to establish itself as a leading tourism destination within the Turkish market, Uganda held Tourism Roadshows in Gaziantep and Istanbul on June 16th and 18th.
The campaign was organised by the Uganda Embassy in Ankara, in collaboration with the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uganda, and select Ugandan Tour and Travel companies.
On Friday, Nusura Tiperu, Uganda's ambassador in Türkiye, revealed that each roadshow had attracted over 200 Turkish tour trade buyers, including Turkish tour operators, travel agents, tourism investors, tourism enthusiasts and media.
“This strong turnout highlights the increasing interest among Turkish travellers and stakeholders in discovering Uganda’s unique attractions,” she added during a briefing in Istanbul.
The campaign is part of Uganda’s Economic and Commercial Diplomacy Strategy, coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to enhance tourism and business ties with different countries.
The roadshows are built against the backdrop of a successful Familiarisation (FAM) Trip to Uganda, organised by Turkish tour operators from 25 April to 2 May 2026, which offered participants direct exposure to Uganda’s diverse tourism sites and opportunities.
The main goal was to strengthen engagement with the Turkish travel sector, promote tourism partnerships, and develop travel packages to Uganda, states a release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Tiperu emphasised tourism as a key aspect of Uganda–Türkiye relations and highlighted that the roadshows support the implementation of the 2016 Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Tourism between the two nations.
She reiterated the Embassy’s commitment to promoting Uganda’s tourism potential and encouraging closer collaboration among stakeholders.
During both events, Ugandan tour operators engaged directly with their Turkish counterparts through Business-to-Business (B2B) sessions to establish commercial partnerships and broaden market access.
Mr Francis Nyende, Marketing Manager at the Uganda Tourism Board, presented Uganda’s rich tourism offerings, including mountain gorilla trekking, wildlife safaris, adventure tourism, birdwatching, cultural heritage, and the country’s Brand Tagline, “Explore Uganda, the 'Pearl of Africa.”
Mr Hüseyin Kurt, Managing Director of GlobeMeets International Tourism Marketing Company, highlighted the considerable potential of Turkey’s outbound tourism market.
He expressed his commitment to supporting Uganda’s efforts to position itself as one of Africa’s premier tourism destinations and pledged to collaboratively showcase Uganda’s tourism products and experiences to Turkish travellers.
The roadshows also featured testimonies from several Turkish travel sector players who have visited Uganda. Travel influencer Mr Çağatay Özdemir, with over 1.3 million followers on Instagram, shared his personal travel experiences in Uganda.
He praised Uganda for offering a distinctive and authentic cultural and experiential tourism experience.
Özdemir described gorilla tracking as the highlight of his visit, and urged Turkish travellers to consider Uganda for their next trip, citing its stunning landscapes, diverse wildlife, warm hospitality, and rich cultural heritage.
The Istanbul Roadshow concluded with a raffle draw, organised in partnership with Turkish Airlines, which awarded two fortunate participants with return air tickets to Uganda.
This initiative generated considerable enthusiasm and further strengthened the collaboration between Uganda’s tourism promotion efforts and key industry partners.
The winners expressed their excitement at the chance to visit Uganda and experience its celebrated attractions firsthand.
The successful conclusion of the Gaziantep and Istanbul roadshows is expected to increase awareness of Destination Uganda in Türkiye, reinforce partnerships between Ugandan and Turkish tourism stakeholders, and boost tourist arrivals from the Turkish market.
