Uganda has intensified its push to capture Australia’s high-value outbound travel market following a strategic tourism business dialogue held on the sidelines of the Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo (POATE) 2026 at Speke Resort Munyonyo.

Chaired by Uganda’s High Commissioner to Australia, Dorothy Samali Hyuha, the high-level working lunch brought together Uganda’s leading tour operators, hotel owners, hospitality executives and tourism stakeholders with a visiting Australian delegation comprising top tour operators, travel agents and media personalities currently undertaking a 10-day familiarisation tour across Uganda.

The closed-door engagement focused on aligning Uganda’s tourism products, conservation offerings and hospitality experiences with the evolving expectations of Australian travellers, who increasingly prioritise authenticity, sustainability, emotional connection, adventure and low-density destinations.

"The Australian traveller is not simply looking for sightseeing," Ambassador Hyuha explained.

"They are increasingly looking for authenticity, emotional depth, sustainability, adventure, and meaningful experiences. Uganda naturally possesses these strengths, but our focus now is how to strategically package and position them for that market."

Key discussion themes included premium experiential tourism, conservation-driven travel, wellness and transformational journeys, bespoke itinerary development, destination storytelling, pricing competitiveness and cross-market tourism partnerships.

Participants also explored opportunities for eco-tourism collaborations, safari and conservation circuits, luxury hospitality offerings, diaspora tourism and business-to-business cooperation.

Ugandan stakeholders showcased the country’s diverse tourism portfolio, ranging from gorilla trekking and wildlife safaris to community-based tourism, MICE offerings and luxury lodges, while Australian delegates shared insights into emerging travel trends, booking behaviours and spending patterns within their domestic market.

Ambassador Hyuha emphasised that Uganda’s tourism growth strategy increasingly depends on building stronger commercial relationships capable of converting interest into long-term partnerships.

"Tourism growth today is driven by collaboration, market intelligence, and strategic packaging," she said.

"It is important that Uganda's tourism ecosystem understands how Australian travellers think, book, travel, and emotionally connect with destinations."

According to the Uganda High Commission in Canberra, the latest engagement forms part of a broader strategy to transition Uganda from a largely exploratory market within Australia into a recognised premium long-haul tourism destination.

Industry leaders described the dialogue as a critical step towards strengthening Uganda’s digital visibility, aviation connectivity, destination branding and market intelligence sharing with Australian travel professionals.

With Australia representing a growing high-spend outbound market, both sides expressed commitment to advancing co-marketing initiatives, trade missions, tourism investment partnerships and joint product development tailored to the preferences of experiential travellers.

As global competition for premium tourists intensifies, Uganda is betting that its unique combination of wildlife, culture, conservation leadership and authentic hospitality, when strategically packaged and effectively communicated, will resonate strongly with Australian travellers seeking transformative experiences beyond the ordinary.
