KAMPALA - The Uhuru waterfalls are overshadowed by the mighty Murchison Falls and that is why they are rarely known.
Uhuru Falls came into existence in 1962 when Uganda experienced el-Niño rains which lasted for several weeks.
The rains resulted in a tremendous increase in the amount of water flowing through the same Victoria Nile channel.
The narrow cleft of about 7 meters at Murchison Falls could not accommodate all the arriving water.
The flowing water forced part of the Murchison Falls to create a tributary that formed the second falls.
Due to the increase in the water levels, Church Hill Bridge that existed in 1962 was swept away to form a subsidiary falls alongside Murchison falls.
The formed subsidiary falls was named “Uhuru” signifying independence.
