Yunus Sentamu’s 49th-minute strike proved decisive as Uganda Premier League leaders Vipers SC edged a resilient Police FC 1-0 at Kavumba Recreation Grounds on Thursday.
Sentamu, who had been kept quiet by Police’s disciplined defense in the first half, broke the deadlock after connecting with a precise cross from Allan Okello. The goal sparked jubilation among Vipers’ traveling fans, but the match remained fiercely contested.
Police responded with relentless pressure, forcing Vipers into a defensive battle. Goalkeeper Alfred Mudekereza made crucial saves in the closing stages to preserve the narrow lead, handing Police their second home defeat of the season.
The win extends Vipers’ lead at the top of the table to six points over second-placed NEC FC, who have a game in hand and will face Wakiso Giants on Friday.
Vipers assistant coach Fred Muhumuza praised his team’s resilience, saying, “It was a tough game. Not many teams have come to Kavumba and walked away with three points this season. I thank my players for their determination, especially in the closing moments.”
Police FC head coach Simon Peter Mugerwa rued a defensive lapse that led to Sentamu’s goal. “We have ourselves to blame for switching off defensively. You cannot allow a player like Okello to deliver such a cross, and leaving Sentamu unmarked was costly,” he said.
In other matches, Lugazi FC completed a season double over Express FC with a 1-0 victory at Lugazi Stadium, courtesy of Sharif Saaka’s 44th-minute strike. Meanwhile, BUL continued their strong second-round form, defeating Kitara 1-0 at Hamz Stadium Nakivubo thanks to Jerome Kirya’s 54th-minute goal.
