Vipers SC have been crowned the 2024/2025 Uganda Premier League champions after a commanding 2-0 away win over Kitara FC at Royal Park Stadium in Butema, Hoima City.

The victory sealed their seventh league title and capped off a dominant campaign, marking their fourth championship in the last six seasons.

The triumph took Vipers to 68 points—four ahead of second-placed NEC FC, who edged SC Villa 1-0 at Mutesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku.

With just one round of matches remaining, the points gap is now unassailable, confirming Vipers as champions regardless of final-day outcomes.

In a title-deciding clash full of anticipation, Congolese forward Gusto Mulongo broke the deadlock in the 14th minute, pouncing on a goalkeeping error by Kitara’s Yawe. Veteran striker Yunus Sentamu then sealed the win with a clinical finish in the 66th minute.

The fixture was charged with tension, given Kitara's formidable home form and their growing rivalry with Vipers. However, the narrative shifted dramatically when Kitara head coach Wasswa Bbosa named a heavily rotated lineup, resting seven key players including Patrick Kaddu, David Ndihabwe, Benjamin Nyakoojo, Jasper Aheebwa, Titus Ssematimba, Lazaro Bwambale, and first-choice goalkeeper Crispus Kusiima, who was left out of the matchday squad entirely.

Bbosa’s decision sparked a storm on social media. While some fans criticized the move as disrespectful to the integrity of the league, others defended it, citing the club’s focus on their upcoming Uganda Cup semi-final second leg—also against Vipers—set for Saturday in Butema. Kitara trail 1-0 from the first leg played at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.

Despite heavy afternoon rains and a waterlogged pitch that made play difficult, Vipers adapted quickly and took control of the match. Their intent was evident, especially after last week’s shock 1-0 defeat to BUL FC in Njeru had delayed their title celebrations.

This latest success is especially notable given the turbulent start to Vipers’ season. After a 3-1 opening-day loss to NEC, head coach Nikola Kavazovic was sacked just four months into his tenure. The club turned to former Wakiso Giants boss John Luyinda, who, along with assistant Fred Muhumuza, orchestrated a remarkable turnaround that culminated in the championship.

Since winning their first league title in 2010—under their former name, Bunamwaya FC—Vipers have established themselves as a dominant force in Ugandan football. This latest triumph further solidifies their legacy at the summit of the game.
