Six women parish councilors from the sub-counties of Ochero County in Kaberamaido District participated in a unique bicycle race, carrying their husbands on their bicycles, during the belated district Women’s Day celebrations held at Kaburepoli Primary School in Ochero Sub-County on Wednesday, March 19.
The event, organised by Ochero County Member of Parliament Julius Peter Emigu, was designed to align with the Women’s Day theme while promoting family bonding and entertainment. Emigu explained that the race was intended to showcase the balance of roles between men and women in society, emphasizing love and unity while entertaining the public.
The race covered a distance of 700 meters, with the women cycling while carrying their husbands. After completing the cycling segment, the husbands reciprocated by carrying their wives on their backs for an additional 100 meters. The winner of the race received a brand-new bicycle, while other participants were awarded various prizes.
Elijah Emaku, one of the organizers, expressed satisfaction with the event, stating that their goal of entertaining the public was successfully achieved.
Winner Shares Her Experience
Everline Iseo, a parish councilor from Swagere A in Ochero Sub-County, emerged as the race winner. She described the activity as a unique and memorable experience. “This is the first time I have seen a bicycle race involving women carrying their husbands. It was even funnier when our husbands carried us on their backs. I am grateful for the bicycle, which is a special gift for our family,” Iseo said.
Her husband, Peter Oguti, shared his thoughts on carrying his wife during the race. “It felt funny, but since we know each other well, there was no need to fear the public. The fact that everyone received a gift made it a great sporting activity,” Oguti remarked.
