Wananchi stay top as Hockey League takes Independence break

Wananchi Hockey Club continues to dominate the national league, leading both the men’s and women’s tables.

Wananchi leads the men’s standings with 48 points from 16 games, while their women’s team tops the table with 34 points from 12 matches.

The men’s leaders are eight points clear of second-placed Kampala Hockey Stallions, having played one game more, while in the women’s league, Wananchi holds a four-point advantage over Kampala Swans, who have 30 points.

Thunders enjoyed the weekend’s biggest result in the men’s league after edging the more experienced KCH Originals 1-0. The victory leaves Thunders sixth on the table with 26 points from 16 games.

In the women’s league, defending champions HDF are third and face a difficult task in their bid to retain the title.

The tournament returns to Ntare School, which last hosted the event in 2022, with several schools expected to participate, according to Uganda Hockey Federation assistant general secretary Joshua Masawi.

“We had a good turnout at Ntare School, which is why we are giving them the opportunity to host again. We keep shifting the Independence Tournament, especially to attract schools, in a bid to expand the sport to as many districts as possible in line with the new National Sports Law,” said Masawi.

The 2025 edition was held at Duhaga SSS in Hoima, where Kyadondo SS emerged as winners in both the boys’ and girls’ categories.

In the club competitions, Kampala Stallions won the men’s title, while Weatherhead Gazelles are the defending champions in the women’s category.
