The Walukuba Barbarians opened their Nile Special Rugby 7s campaign in stunning fashion, successfully defending their Coronation 7s title at the Kyadondo Rugby Grounds over the weekend.
The Barbarians swept past Platinum Credit Heathens 19–5 in the final, silencing home support with a display of dominant precision. Their path to the trophy wasn’t just about the finale, they beat Heathens twice across the weekend, underlining their superiority.
“I’m thrilled. The boys have done a great job defending the Coronation 7s,” said head coach Leonard Lubambula. “We won it last year, and to return and retain the title is special.”
Walukuba started slowly, struggling in their first two games. But Lubambula’s rallying call reignited the squad’s spark.
“I reminded them, ‘Gentlemen, we’re defending champions, let’s play like it.’ Against Heathens in Game 3, they stepped up: dominant in collisions, sharp in decision-making, and clinical on the scoreboard,” he explained.
Sunday saw them navigate a stacked field of quality sides. The coach emphasized the growing competitiveness of the tournament.
“This year’s edition saw 16 teams, up from 12 last year. It’s a big leap, and speaks volumes about the tournament’s growth and the rising standards,” Lubambula added.
