Wakiso Giants continued with their poor start to the second round of the Uganda Premier League after going 2-1 at home against Wakiso Giants.
The Wakiso Giants lost 1-0 to KCCA FC in their opening game of the second round before they went on to settle for a goalless draw against Vipers at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.
Ambrose Alinda’s own goal gave Maroons the lead in the 50th minute before Fredrick Kigozi doubled the lead in the 69th minute. Alinda scored Wakiso Giants' consolation in the 74th minute but it was not enough to help his side pick a point.
The defeat saw Wakiso Giants remain fifth with 26 points, four above ninth-placed Maroons. KCCA FC who won't be in action this weekend is top with 35 points.
Wakiso Giants who had an impressive first round have not yet replicated that in the second round. The departure of Ibrahim Kasulehas affected them. Kasule was Wakiso Giants' best player in the first round with five goals and six assists.
Midfielder Titus Ssematimba, and defenders Ronald Madoi and Apollo Kakogwe who are with Uganda Hippos that was recently eliminated in the ongoing Africa U20 Nations Cup in Egypt, and their unavailability has affected the club.
Forwards Frank Ssebufu, Norman Ojik, and Shariph Kimbowa are starving for service because of Ssematimba and Kasule’s absence and it explains why three games in a row and no goal has been scored from the trio.
The sooner head coach John Luyinda finds replacements from the available players for the two mentioned midfielders, the better.
Elsewhere, Thomas Ochungo was on target as Busoga United picked up their second victory in the league as they beat struggling UPDF 1-0 at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru. Earlier Busoga United had beaten Black Power 2-0 away in Lira.
In Wakiso, Soltilo Bright Stars were 3-1 winners over Blacks Power at Kavumba Recreation ground. Denis Kaka Omony notched a brace before Samuel Ssenyonjo added the other for Bright Stars while Robert Eseru scored a consolation for Blacks Power.
The league will resume on Saturday with BUL hosting on form URA at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru.
