“I am also going to work for the entire continent to see that more countries take on the sport competitively and also have more exposure on the continent, not only Uganda,” Wafula added.

Uganda Hockey Association (UHA) president Phillip Wafula has vowed to work hard for the further development of hockey in Uganda after being appointed a member of the African Hockey Federation (AFHF) development committee.

“I am glad to be appointed into the new role and will ensure Uganda benefits from my appointment to the role since there is still a lot the sport needs in terms of equipment, facilities, and grants which we can’t tap into for the growth,” Wafula noted.

Wafula made the remarks on Wednesday in an interview with New Vision Sport after his appointment.

“I am also going to work for the entire continent to see that more countries take on the sport competitively and also have more exposure on the continent, not only Uganda,” he added.

The committee comprises Sarah Bennett from Zimbabwe as chairperson, Gary Dolley and Roblyn Morgan both from South Africa, Isaac Graham from Ghana, Manjit Jnite from Kenya, Wycliff Ongori from Kenya, Wafula from Uganda, and Ahmed Ezz from Egypt as the athletes’ representative.

The development committee was one of the four that were named including the umpires, officials, and competitions committees.

Wafula at the 2022 congress held in Ghana, vouched for an AFHF executive committee member spot, lost the election but did not lose hope of serving the continental body.

“I never lost hope of serving at the continental level even after losing during the 2022 congress, I showed how ready I was to offer my support at any opportune moment once an opportunity is presented and I am now ready to serve,” he said.

The appointment members on each committee will assume responsibility in their capacities with immediate effect.

The appointment of Wafula comes at a time when UHA is looking for a new home for league games since the redevelopment of the Lugogo Sports Complex is soon starting.
