Kampala Hockey Club (KHC) Swans are eager to compete in the Africa Cup of Clubs tournament (ACCC) in Port Said, Egypt, from January 30 to February 7.
Their enthusiasm reflects the Uganda Hockey Association’s desire to give women more exposure on the continental stage ahead of the 2025 Hockey Africa Cup of Nations (ACN). The ACCC will provide valuable preparation for Ugandan players who will make the national team.
With arguably one of the best women's hockey teams in the East African region, the Swans qualified for the continental test after winning the 2023 national hockey league.
However, the Swans' local success can only be put to the test if they make it to Egypt, as the intense games will turn them into a formidable force.
Players like Winnie Nandi, Julianna Serunjogi, Jemimah Arayo, Noeline Natabo, and Rhemah Ahairwe, all under 24, will learn a lot at the tournament if funds permit. Meanwhile, players like sisters Norah Alum, Winnie Alaro, and Lucky Akello, along with Margaret Nazziwa and Joy Kiggunddu, will refine their form in preparation to lead the national women's team on the continental stage.
The team’s ability to travel to Egypt will provide an opportunity for the young players to competitively gel with the seniors as they strive to better their 2022 performance in Accra, Ghana, where they finished sixth out of the seven nations that participated.
Reliable sources from the club revealed that the Swans require UGX 160 million to travel and compete in the tournament. They are also running a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for their participation, as well as lobbying the government for support.
“We are looking at the bigger picture of marketing our club globally, gaining visibility at the ACCC, and preparing for the local hockey season,” the source revealed.
