The uncertainty surrounding Ivan Minnaert’s future at Vipers SC has been resolved after the club confirmed the departure of the Belgian coach, ending his brief but eventful spell at Kitende.

In a statement released on Sunday (June 7), Vipers announced that they had mutually parted ways with Minnaert following the expiry of his contract.

“Vipers Sports Club is pleased to announce that it has mutually parted ways with head coach Ivan Minnaert after the expiry of his contract,” the club said.

“The club appreciates Minnaert's dedicated service and professionalism to Vipers SC and wishes him the best in his career path.”

The announcement comes just days after reports emerged suggesting that Minnaert’s future at the club was in doubt, despite guiding the Venoms to one of their most successful league campaigns in recent history.

When those reports first surfaced, many found them difficult to believe. Minnaert had just led Vipers to their eighth StarTimes Uganda Premier League title, completed the season unbeaten on the pitch, and was named Coach of the Season.

On paper, it appeared to be a perfect debut season for a coach tasked with restoring the league title to Kitende.

However, football success is often assessed beyond results alone.

Throughout the season, reports from within the club indicated that not all stakeholders were fully convinced by Minnaert’s approach.

Some players were reportedly unhappy with tactical decisions that they felt restricted their freedom on the pitch.

There were claims that certain players were regularly deployed out of position, while others believed the system prioritised discipline and structure over creativity and flair.

Although these concerns were not publicly raised by the players, the reports persisted even as Vipers marched to the title.

In hindsight, Minnaert may have given the clearest indication of his uncertain future shortly after winning the championship.

“In coaching, the day you sign is the day you get sacked,” he said when asked about speculation surrounding his future.

At the time, the comment appeared to be a light-hearted reflection on the unpredictable nature of football management.

Today, it reads more like a foreshadowing of his departure.

Minnaert leaves Vipers after achieving the primary objective set before him, delivering the league title back to the club.

However, his exit highlights the high expectations at Kitende, where winning silverware is often only part of the job description.

The club’s ambitions extend beyond domestic success, with Vipers aiming to establish themselves among Africa’s elite.

Qualification for the CAF Champions League group stage remains a key target, following last season’s elimination by Zambia’s Power Dynamos in the final preliminary round.
