SC Villa v URA

Stanbic Uganda Cup holders Vipers SC and rivals Kitara FC will tonight seek redemption when they face off in the decisive semifinal second leg under the floodlights at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.
The tie remains finely poised after the two sides settled for a goalless draw in the first leg at Royal Park, Butema in Hoima earlier this month leaving everything to play for in what promises to be a tense encounter.
For Vipers, tonight’s fixture comes at a critical moment in their season. The Venoms, who lead the Uganda Premier League (UPL) standings with 61 points, three ahead of second-placed KCCA FC are chasing a domestic double but have in recent weeks seen their momentum stall after four successive draws in all competitions.
Three of those stalemates came in the league, allowing their title rivals to close the gap, while the scoreless first-leg draw in Hoima further heightened pressure on head coach Ivan Minnaert.
The Belgian tactician has recently come under growing scrutiny from sections of the Vipers faithful, with some fans questioning both the team’s tactical approach and lack of attacking spark.
Vipers’ recent performances have also reportedly not gone down well with club proprietor Lawrence Mulindwa, a businessman known for demanding results and showing little tolerance for poor performances.
Therefore, failure to retain the Uganda Cup could have serious consequences for Minnaert, with tonight’s match potentially shaping his immediate future at Kitende.
This contest also carries added spice given the growing rivalry between the two clubs. Tensions between the sides escalated earlier this season when Kitara were awarded three points and three goals after Vipers failed to honour a fixture scheduled under the now-suspended controversial three-round league format.
Interestingly, the two meetings played on the pitch this season have both ended goalless in the league at Kitende and the first-leg semifinal in Hoima.
Kitara, however, arrive at Kitende nursing wounds of their own where coach Wasswa Bbosa is under pressure after watching his side’s UPL title ambitions collapse following a 3-2 defeat to Express at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo on Tuesday.
Frustrated Kitara supporters who travelled to Nakivubo vented their anger at the final whistle, piling more pressure on Bbosa and his players.
That defeat came on the back of a worrying dip in form, having previously lost 1-0 at home to NEC FC, and been also held to a frustrating goalless draw at home by relegation-threatened Calvary.
Victory over Vipers would therefore offer the perfect response and send the Royals to only their second Uganda Cup final, having won the competition in 2024 with a 1-0 victory over NEC.
History, though, is against Kitara. Last season, Vipers eliminated them at this same stage, winning both semifinal legs 1-0 to progress 2-0 on aggregate.
Elsewhere, nine-time winners SC Villa who hold a commanding 2-0 advantage from the first leg will host struggling URA FC on Saturday at FUFA Stadium, Kadiba in Mengo where they will be looking to get the job done.
