Vipers SC will be aiming to take a significant step towards sealing an eighth Uganda Premier League (UPL) title when they face KCCA FC in a high-stakes encounter at Philip Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, tonight.

The Kitende-based side currently sit top of the table with 58 points from 25 matches, holding a seven-point advantage over second-placed KCCA, who have played the same number of games.

Victory for Vipers would stretch that lead to 10 points and place them firmly on the brink of title glory.

For KCCA, however, the clash represents a must-win fixture. Anything less than three points would effectively end their title ambitions and confirm a seventh straight season without silverware, following their Uganda Cup quarterfinal exit earlier this month.

Vipers head into the contest in formidable domestic form, having remained unbeaten on the pitch this season. Their only setback came off the field, when the FUFA Disciplinary Panel docked them three points and awarded them to Kitara over a disputed opening fixture.

The Venoms will also draw confidence from their recent dominance over KCCA. They are unbeaten in the last four meetings between the two sides, winning twice last season, one in the league, the Uganda Cup final and securing a draw. Earlier this season, Vipers edged KCCA 1-0 at Kitende and will now be targeting a league double.

On their last visit to Lugogo, the Venoms secured a convincing 2-0 victory, with Allan Okello and Yunus Sentamu on target.

KCCA, meanwhile, will come into the match under boiling pressure following a disappointing 1-0 defeat away to Calvary FC, a result that dented their title charge. However, they will take encouragement from their recent home form, including a 1-0 win over third-placed Kitara.

Vipers were impressive in their most recent outing, cruising to a 3-0 victory over UPPC Entebbe, with Sentamu scoring twice and Mulongo adding the third.

KCCA assistant coach Jackson Magera has called for an immediate response from his players after the Calvary setback.

“We need to respond strongly, show character, play with determination and seriousness while avoiding repeated mistakes,” Magera said. “We are still in the title race and must win all our remaining matches while hoping our rivals drop points.”
