SC Villa’s Uganda Premier League (UPL) title ambitions face a defining test tonight when they host table leaders and defending champions Vipers SC under the floodlights at FUFA Stadium Kadiba in Mengo.

The Jogoos go into the contest sitting fourth on 44 points, seven behind the Venoms, with both sides having played 22 matches. A victory for Villa would cut the gap to four points and potentially revive their push for a record-extending 18th league crown with eight games still left in the campaign.

Villa will take confidence from their narrow but significant 1-0 win over rivals KCCA last weekend, where Hassan Mubiru struck the decisive goal in front of an energized home crowd. That victory has injected belief into Zeljko Kovacevic’s side, who remain unbeaten at home this season and will look to use that advantage against a Vipers side yet to lose a league match on the pitch this term.

Mubiru is expected to lead the line again alongside Frank Ssebuufu and Patrick Kakande, as Villa aims to break down a Vipers team that was held to a goalless draw by second-placed Kitara in their previous outing at St Mary’s Stadium in Kitende last Friday. That result trimmed Vipers’ lead at the top and added further tension to an already tight title race.

Attention will also shift to Lugogo on Friday, where third-placed KCCA host Kitara in another crucial fixture. With Kitara on 47 points and KCCA on 45, any slip-up in that encounter could significantly reshape the standings. For Villa, maximum points tonight could prove even more valuable depending on how KCCA and Kitara fare in that clash.

Vipers, meanwhile, will be eager to respond strongly after their stalemate with Kitara. Their attacking trio of Usama Arafat, Milton Karisa and Odili Chukwuma will be tasked with rediscovering their scoring touch against a disciplined Villa defence led by Geoffrey Lubangakene, Raymond Barasa and Simon Kato Ssemayange. Goalkeeper David Lukwago has also been a standout performer in his debut topflight season.

The reverse fixture ended in a 1-1 draw in Kitende, and with Villa’s strong home form set against Vipers’ unbeaten run, another tightly contested battle is expected. The match also renews the tactical duel between Kovacevic and Vipers coach Ivan Minnaert, the only foreign tacticians in the league.
