Victoria University clinches Makerere 7s circuit and University 7s title

The Kampala-based university won the first leg in Entebbe at Kisubi University but narrowly lost the second leg at Kyambogo to Uganda Martyrs University 7-5.

Victoria University triumphed over Uganda Christian University Mukono 34-7 to clinch both the Makerere 7s Circuit and the overall University 7s title.

The Kampala-based university won the first leg in Entebbe at Kisubi University but narrowly lost the second leg at Kyambogo to Uganda Martyrs University 7-5.

On Sunday, November 3rd, Victoria University secured their place in the final by defeating their rivals, Uganda Martyrs University, 26-19 in a fiercely contested semi-final at the Graveyard Ground. Uganda Christian University beat hosts Makerere University 19-12 in the first semi-final, and in the third-place playoff, UMU beat Makerere 24-7.

In the final, UCU’s try was scored by Benjamin Muwanguzi, while Joseph Kana, Aaron Tukei, Malcom Okello, Hector Twinomugisha, Daniel Otim, and Daniel Katerega scored tries for Victoria University. Malcom Okello added the extras, leading to him emerging as the tournament's top scorer. Uganda Christian University’s eighth man, Benjamin Muwanguzi, was voted the tournament’s most valuable player.

Muwanguzi, a first-year engineering student, pledged to work harder and win more trophies in the coming tournaments next year. “I’m humbled to win the MVP accolade in my first university tournament. I’m going to work harder and see that I win more next year,” Muwanguzi noted.

Following the tournament, the universities have now shifted their focus to the East Africa University Championship at Maseno University.
