USSSA unveils 2026–2030 electoral guidelines, sets August 1 for national elections

The Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) has released its 2026–2030 electoral guidelines, outlining the procedures for leadership transitions at district, zonal, and national levels.

Voting will be conducted by secret ballot at all stages, with winners determined by a simple majority.

The electoral process begins at the district level, where over 1,600 positions will be contested. Candidate nominations will run from the 3rd to the 16th of next month, ahead of district elections scheduled for the 20th.

Only professional teachers registered with the Ministry of Education and Sports are eligible to vote, and each candidate may contest only one position.

Zonal elections will follow on July 25, leading to the national elections set for August 1 at the USSSA headquarters. A total of 190 positions will be contested at the zonal level, with representatives from the 19 USSSA zones.

While releasing the guidelines, USSSA president emeritus Patrick Okanya urged stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and credible process by adhering to the association’s rules.

“Candidates for Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, and Treasurer at district and zonal levels must be substantive headteachers or directors of recognised secondary schools and hold at least a degree in education,” Okanya said.

He added that only members present in person will be allowed to vote.

Electoral Commission chairman Joseph Okodeu Opio assured candidates of a free and fair process, stating that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure transparency.

Current USSSA president Justus Mugisha is expected to seek another term, though no official challengers had been declared at the time of reporting.
