Officials from the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) and the Ministry of Education and Sports have completed a five-day inspection of schools bidding to host the 2027 National Championships.

The exercise, which ran from October 14 to 18, 2026, covered 13 schools across Western, Central and Northern Uganda. It was intended to evaluate the readiness and capacity of the bidding institutions to host the games.

The inspection team, divided into two clusters, evaluated key infrastructure, including sports facilities, accommodation, sanitation, catering, medical services, security and other amenities essential for the smooth running of the games.

The Western Uganda team, led by USSSA Second Vice President Bitek P' Okot, inspected Nyakasura School, St. Mary's College Rushoroza, Kigezi High School, Kabale Secondary School, St. Kagwa Bushenyi High School, Bweranyangi Girls' SSS, Uganda Technical College - Bushenyi and Mbarara High School.

"Our inspection tour in Western Uganda was successful. Each school gave us a welcoming hand and had all the essential facilities required to host the national championships," Okot said.

He said the team assessed accommodation standards, medical readiness, feeding arrangements, security and overall infrastructure to ensure a safe and successful event.

"The idea behind the facilities inspection was to verify whether the bidding schools have the capacity to host, covering the safety of athletes, officials and spectators, accessibility, evidence of co-hosting arrangements, and collaboration with local authorities," Okot explained.

The Northern and Central region delegation, led by Sammy Odongo, Assistant Commissioner for Physical Education and Sports at the Ministry of Education and Sports, visited Sacred Heart SS, Kabalega SS, Janan SS Bombo and Seroma Christian High School.

"I have loved the way schools in the Northern and Central regions we visited have shown impressive preparation and are ready to host the games if given the chance. But all that will come after final confirmation from the National Executive Committee," Odongo said.

According to Odongo, the team inspected facilities proposed for the games, including football pitches, basketball courts, volleyball courts, the main hall earmarked for badminton and the dining hall proposed for table tennis, rugby and hockey.

Benson Opira, Deputy Headteacher of Sacred Heart SS, confirmed readiness to host, citing adequate accommodation and playing facilities.

Opira said the school has full support from its management, local leaders, the business community and politicians across the region.

"We are humbled that we managed to receive USSSA officials who came for the fact-finding mission of the facilities in the area. We are ready to host," Opira said.

USSSA Chief Executive Officer Christopher Mugisha expressed gratitude to the schools that showed interest in hosting but encouraged them to work hand in hand with local governments and communities for a successful championship.

Mugisha said that after concluding the inspection exercise, the next stage will be live presentations by all bidding schools, after which the National Organising Committee will announce the hosts.

According to Mugisha, the exercise forms part of USSSA's preparations for the 2027 National Secondary School Championships and its commitment to ensuring that host institutions are adequately equipped to deliver safe, well-organised and successful competitions.
