The Uganda Primary Schools Sports Association (UPSSA) president has asked the Ministry of Education and Sports to revise the primary schools' sports calendar.

According to the calendar, two events - the national primary schools' ball games and the national primary school's Music Dance and Drama (MDD) happen at the same time, which, according to the UPSSA president, has proved an inconvenience both financially and manpower, when it comes to the management of these events.

The national primary schools ball games are taking place in Mbarara City and at the same time, the national primary schools MDD is happening in Hoima City.

Speaking at the official opening ceremony of the primary school's ball games in Mbarara on Wednesday, UPSSA president Pauline Musigire requested a redress.

“We request the Ministry to look into separating the two events from happening at the same time because the local governments and schools find it financially stressful to operate the two at the same time. Our suggestion would be we separate and spread the three national primary schools competitions across the three terms,” Musigire requested.

On the calendar, primary schools stage the kid's athletics in the first term and then have both ball games and MDD at the same time in the second term holiday, and according to Musigire, MDD would be taken to 3rd term and it would have no harm to the academic programs.

When contacted, Physical Education and Sports (PES) commissioner Rev Dr Duncans Mugumya said;

“After all these games we shall have an evaluation meeting and go through all the reports from where we shall make a final decision about their quest,”

The Mbarara got to an official opening on Wednesday with an official opening ceremony presided over by Mbarara City Deputy Resident City Commissioner (RCC) Robert Kanusu, who represented the RCC.

The ball games are happening, for the first time, in partnership with Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Associations (USSSA) which has come in to facilitate capacity building to the primary school teachers and online registration of the primary school kids.

“We are happy as USSSA to have been welcomed into the primary school sports to combine effort for the talent identification and development from the grassroots,” Said USSSA 3rd vice president Harriet Apolot.

The Mbarara City games have for the first time, attracted a hooping 135 local government (cities, municipality, and district) teams presenting over 3000 participants competing in netball, handball, volleyball, and football for both boys and girls in the three-age categories of U12, U14 and U16 and action continues till Tuesday September 5.
