Autocross in Bunjako lived to its billings with competitors yearning for another race in the area.

Twelve crews battled it out in the tricky and adventurous tight route that ended with Hassan Alwi as the winner of the opening Autocross of the five on the FMU calendar.

Hussein Mukuye, the co-driver to Unisan Bakunda urged other clubs to emulate UMOSPOC and open new areas for motorsport.

“I do not know how UMOSPOC found that area, but it was superb, and I request that they organise a national rally event in the area,” Mukuye said.

“It was nice racing near the lake with that water breeze feel and it would be more fun for competitors camping in the area for a week,” Mukuye added.

His words were echoed further by the chairman of the Stewards Shafik Matovu who urged Motorsport clubs to team up and UMOSPOC and organise more event in the area.

“This is a very good area for Motorsport. UMOSPOC has set the bar high by organising a very good event, the trophies are high quality and other Clubs should emulate it,” Matovu said.

Alwi, the two-time UMOSPOC Kabalega rally winner promised to continue participating in the UMOSPOC events because of the quality organisation.

“We just came to have fun and feel my car because we had taken too long without racing it but am happy that we won it and I will be supporting UMOSPOC by competing in the UMOSPOC Kabalega rally later in November,” Alwi said.

Navigated by Musa Nsubuga, Alwi posted the fastest time of six minutes, 42.20 seconds, 1.60 seconds ahead of runners-up Musa Ssegaabwe.

The event, which was the first round of the Autocross Championship, registered tremendous success as it ended incident-free and with no complaints from participants and officials.

The event that was supported by FMU, Worldwide Movers Sandline Beach Bunjako and TIO Travels and Tours had Twelve crews turn up for the event held at Sandline Beach on Bunjako Island in Buwama Mpigi District.

Autocross is a training rally that is used by upcoming rally drivers to get used to the conditions of rallying as a sport and is also used by experienced drivers to test their cars ahead of a competitive competition.

Alex Kikonyogo, the proprietor of the beach assured the organisers United Motorsports Club (UMOSPOC) of his continued support adding that he will contact the local council authorities so that more roads are opened up for a full rally.
