Uganda's top darters are set to renew their fierce rivalry this Independence Day, October 9, 2026, during the highly anticipated Independence Darts Cup at Mamerito Hotel.

The one-day tournament double-functions as the second national ranking tournament of the season. Players will battle for critical ranking points to position themselves for national team consideration.

UPDF darter Solomon Omara has made his intentions clear, targeting a stellar performance to secure a spot on the national squad.

“This is my time to be on the national team," a confident Omara said. "I am ready to seize this opportunity and collect the maximum points to push my tally to 30."

Currently sitting on 28 points, Omara added, "To achieve my target, I must at least make it to the semifinals.”

However, the younger generation has been warned not to expect an easy ride. Veteran darter Augustus Ndigendawa, who doubles as the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) darts team manager, has cautioned the rising stars against complacency.

“I am coming out strong to prove to these young men that I’v

e still got it. My ultimate target is making it to the final,” Ndigendawa declared.

With national team slots on the line, the tournament is a must-watch. Steven Abibi currently sits comfortably at the top of the national rankings with 50 points, followed by Isaac Odoi (39). Patrick Ochieng and Solomon Omara are tied at 28 points, while Isaac Passi closely follows with 26 points.

Over 100 darters will face off across the Singles, Doubles, Mixed Doubles, and Team categories, with their eyes firmly fixed on both the ranking points and the cash prizes at stake.

The men's division features a star-studded lineup, including Uganda’s Seed One Patrick Ochieng (Police), Isaac Passi, Augustus Ndigendawa, former African champion Job Odoi, Solomon Omara, Juma Saidi, Andrew Emomeri, Paul Langol, Robert Okalanyi, David Tabaro, and Ronald Kalete.

The women’s category promises equal drama. Uganda’s Seed One and two-time African champion, Sarah Makanga, faces a stiff title defense against UPDF star Harriet Akot, Isabella Agoro, and Margaret Tuhaise (UWA). Other formidable female contenders chasing the Independence silverware include Maria Namuganyi (Police), Winnie Asuga, Gloria Omwonya, Christine Abalo, and Milly Birabwa.

Beyond the Independence Cup glory, players will also use this tournament to fine-tune their skills ahead of the Conservation Cup due October 30 and the Uganda Open tournaments scheduled for later this month and next month.
