Zone 3 Africa Boxing Championship
October 16-25, Nairobi, Kenya
Uganda’s national boxing team, the Bombers, has vowed to make a triumphant debut at the Zone 3 Africa Boxing Championship, set to take place from October 16–25, 2025, in Nairobi, Kenya.
During their official flag-off ceremony at the National Council of Sports (NCS), team captain Kasim Murungi pledged to lead his squad into the medal bracket and return home as champions.
Murungi, who is making his fourth international appearance for the Bombers—having previously competed at the 2023 Africa Boxing Championship in Yaoundé, the 2023 Mandela Cup in South Africa, and the 2024 Africa Olympic Boxing Qualifiers in Dakar—expressed confidence in the team’s readiness.
“I’ve been entrusted with a great responsibility to lead this team in such a competitive championship,” Murungi told Vision Sport before the team’s departure by bus to Nairobi. “But my strength lies in being surrounded by a gifted and talented group capable of defeating anyone.”
“Despite a few challenges along the way, we’ve trained hard. With the guidance of our experienced coaches and the blessings of Almighty Allah, I believe success is within reach.”
The team was flagged off by NCS Assistant General Secretary (Technical) Nicholas Chebet, accompanied by administrators James Kasumba and Anne Nankya. Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) President Moses Muhangi and Vice President Sula Kamoga were also present.
Chebet urged the Bombers to uphold discipline and represent Uganda with pride, reminding them that boxing remains the country’s most decorated sport in terms of medal achievements both locally and internationally.
Meanwhile, UBF President Muhangi called on the NCS for increased funding, revealing that the team would travel to Kenya without allowances.
“Thank God we’ve managed to field a team to represent Uganda at the continental level. That’s all we could afford,” Muhangi said. “This entire year, we’ve only received Shs130 million from NCS, which is a drop in the ocean compared to our planned activities.”
Uganda will be represented by 16 elite boxers—11 men and 5 women—under the stewardship of head coach Lawrence Kalyango, popularly known as ‘Coach Lora’. He will be assisted by Abdul Tebazaalwa, the 1999 All-Africa Games bantamweight gold medalist, and Ramanthan Seguya of Lukanga Boxing Club.
Thirteen African nations have confirmed participation in the championship, including defending champions DR Congo, hosts Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Gabon, Cameroon, Congo Brazzaville, Ethiopia, Somalia, and South Sudan, among others.
