Heavyweight boxer Aziz Ringo, a grandson of former Ugandan President and boxer Idi Amin, has vowed to punch his way to gold at the forthcoming Zone 3 Africa Boxing Championship in Nairobi, Kenya.
Ringo is among the 15 elite boxers selected to represent Uganda at the continental event, which runs from October 16–25, 2025, at the Kasarani Gymnasium.
Standing tall at 5ft 9, the Kololo Boxing Club powerhouse is confident of making a strong statement on his national team debut with the Bombers, as he aims to return home with gold.
“For the last two years, I’ve been working tirelessly for this opportunity. I can’t wait to step into the ring and represent my country for the very first time,” Ringo told Vision Sport.
“I’m in good shape, fit, and more than ready for this championship. As a team, we’ve set a target to emerge overall winners because we have the potential to do so.”
The Bombers are currently holding double training sessions at both Lugogo Hockey Grounds and COBAP Boxing Gym in Lubya, Rubaga Division, as part of their final preparations.
Featherweight boxer Kasim Murungi, a 2023 African Games bronze medalist in Accra, Ghana, will captain the squad, which comprises 10 men and 5 women under head coach Lawrence “Coach Lora” Kalyango.
Kalyango will be assisted by Abdul Tebazaalwa, the 1999 All-Africa Games flyweight gold medalist, and Ramathan Seguya of Lukanga Boxing Club.
“We’ve entered the final phase of preparations, and all signs show we’re ready,” said Coach Kalyango. “I have a fully fit and talented team, and God willing, we shall return as champions.”
Among the notable male boxers on the team are Farahat “The Nightmare” Manirola, a light welterweight who also competes professionally, and Alfred “Gorilla” Ojok of Brawn Boxing Club, who won the IBA middleweight title at the inaugural AFBC Pro Boxing Gala in Tunisia earlier this year.
The women’s team will be led by welterweight Emily Nakalema, alongside Erinah, the 2023 African Boxing Championship light welterweight silver medalist; Brenda Muduwa, 2025 WBC amateur flyweight bronze medalist; Fatumah Nabikolo, 2024 Mandela Cup featherweight bronze medalist; and bantamweight debutant Angel Katushabe.
So far, 12 African nations including hosts Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, DR Congo (defending champions), Cameroon, Congo Brazzaville, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Gabon — have confirmed participation.
