Final

Kenya 35 Uganda 21

Uganda’s national kabaddi team returned from the 2026 Africa Kabaddi Championship in Zanzibar with a silver medal after an impressive campaign that saw them reach the final against Kenya.

Uganda's title hopes were ended by Kenya, who secured a 35-21 victory in the final to claim gold and leave Uganda as runners-up.

Gasita Tenywa Marvin was among Uganda’s standout performers and was recognized as the team’s best defender. The Kyadondo SS Matugga student produced a series of strong defensive displays throughout the championship.

Team captain Douglas Mulalira also played a key leadership role, guiding the squad throughout the tournament and inspiring them to the continental final.

The team’s campaign was supported by the Uganda Kabaddi Federation under General Secretary Edgar Mujuni, while Plascon sponsored the national team’s participation in the championship.

How Kabaddi is played

Kabaddi is a fast-paced team sport that combines strength, speed, strategy, and teamwork. Two teams compete by taking turns sending a player, known as a raider, into the opponent’s half of the court.

The raider attempts to touch one or more defenders and return safely to his own half, while the defending team tries to stop him. Points are awarded for successful raids and defensive tackles, making both attacking ability and defensive coordination important.

Quick decision-making, physical fitness, strength, and teamwork are essential throughout the game.

Uganda’s journey to the final was therefore a reflection of both individual talent and collective effort. The Uganda Kabaddi Federation, Plascon, Edgar Mujuni, the coaching staff, captain Douglas Mulalira, the players, their families, supporters, and all Ugandans who followed the team’s progress deserve recognition for their contribution to the campaign.

Although the 35-21 defeat denied Uganda the gold medal, the silver represents a significant achievement and provides a strong foundation for the continued growth and development of kabaddi in Uganda.
