Uganda swimmers will be looking for another successful outing when they compete in the 7th edition of the CANA Zone 3 Swimming Championship in Dar-es-Salaam, November, 17-20.

A team of 48 athletes (17 girls and 31 boys) left for the event on Sunday for the championship that comprises one of the four zones under the auspices of the African Swimming Federation (CANA).

Ten months ago Uganda came top of the championship when they hosted the 6th edition of the event at the KISU pool in Kampala after they collected 2827 points to Tanzania’s 2638, which came second.

Uganda won owing to the number of entries at home as Tanzania took the individual awards over the different age categories and it waits to be seen whether Uganda with fewer numbers in Tanzania can change that statistic.

Uganda which has fielded slightly a different team will be hoping that the likes of Tara Kisawuzi, Pendo Kawumi, John Kafumbe and Steve Magera can replicate the 6th edition performance that saw them set new meet records then.

Experienced swimmers like Ben Kaganda, Namanya Ampaire, Karla Mugisha, Paulsen Ssetumba, Tara Kisawuzi and Freda Nakafu will be expected to give Uganda the momentum for medals just like the Mwase brothers Mathew and Arthur who are on the team. Karla Mugisha and Joshua Kaganda are the team captains.

Olivier Nalwadda and Ezra Kalaari coached Ugandans that will be up against swimmers from Burundi, Sudan, Eritrea, and the hosts Tanzania.

Kenya finished third overall in Kampala with 2369 points as Uganda carried the day.

In 2019 Uganda collected a total 58 medals in swimming and 5 medals in Open Water, emerging second overall out of nine participating countries in the event that was held in Kenya.

Uganda's delegation was led by Uganda Swimming Federation president Moses Mwase with Mary-Anne Isabirye as team manager who will be assisted by Peter Buvumbo.
