Uganda secures knockout berth as Egypt dominates in straight-sets victory

Uganda finished second in Pool B at the African Nations Championship in Nairobi, Kenya, despite losing 3–0 to Egypt on Thursday morning.
The Lady Volleyball Cranes collected six points from their opening two matches, which was enough to secure their place in the knockout stage.
Egypt topped the pool after beating Uganda 25–14, 25–9, 25–16 in straight sets.
Uganda struggled from the start, losing the opening set 25–14 before Egypt extended its advantage with a 25–9 win in the second set.
The Lady Volleyball Cranes improved in the third set but could not stop Egypt, which won 25–16 to complete the 3–0 victory.
Egypt dominated the match statistically, scoring 44 attack points to Uganda's 25 and eight block points to Uganda's two. Egypt also had four service points compared with Uganda's none.
Despite the loss, Uganda's two victories had already guaranteed them a place in the knockout stage, with Burkina Faso and Senegal unable to catch them in Pool B.
Unlike a traditional group-to-quarter-final format, all 15 teams in the championship advance from the group stage into the playoff tree.
The knockout stage will begin with the Round of 16 on Saturday and Sunday, with teams cross-matched according to their final pool positions.
As the second-placed team in Pool B, Uganda is scheduled to face the third-placed team from Pool D.
Pool D features Rwanda, Algeria, Congo and Burundi, meaning Uganda's opponent will be confirmed after the final Pool D matches.
Congo or Algeria are currently the most likely teams to finish third in Pool D, although the final standings will determine Uganda's opponent.
The Round of 16 winners will advance to the quarter-finals, followed by the semi-finals and final in a single-elimination playoff.
Teams eliminated in the knockout rounds will continue in classification matches to determine the final positions from fifth to 15th.
The eventual African champion will earn direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
The top three teams will also qualify for the 2027 FIVB Volleyball World Cup in the United States and Canada.
