Uganda secured the 30th position in the recently-concluded World Lacrosse Men’s Championship 2023 held in San Diego, California, marking a significant improvement from their previous rankings.

In 2014, the Ugandan team was placed 34th at the competition held in Denver, Colorado, and in 2018, they ranked 40th in Netanya, Israel.

The Uganda Lacrosse Association proudly announced this achievement on their social media platforms, commending the team’s efforts under the guidance of head coach Patrick Oriana.

“We’re happy to report that Uganda is now ranked 30th in the world – our highest ranking ever – after San Diego, California!” the association proclaimed.

Robie Kakonge, the Ugandan ambassador to the US, showered praise on the team for their exceptional performance in the tournament. She specifically recognised Brian Mushana Kwesiga, the team’s general manager, for his invaluable contributions in attaining such great heights.

“Congratulations to the @UgandaLacrosse Men’s National Team for their 30th ranking at the 2023 @WorldLacrosse Championship in San Diego, California. Thank you, Coach @bkwesiga, for your leadership and contribution to Uganda’s #SportsDiplomacy,” Kakonge applauded.

During the campaign, the Ugandan team exhibited their creativity and resourcefulness by bringing along African crafted materials to sell at the event. The purpose was to generate funds to support the team and to showcase the rich traditions of African fashion, including vibrant bitenge fabrics, bracelets, sandals, and more.

Despite not securing any victories in their games throughout the tournament, the team’s qualification itself was a noteworthy achievement. Out of the 30 teams that competed, Uganda’s participation placed them at the 30th position.

The championship, which concluded on July 1, 2023, saw the United States of America emerge as the champions, successfully defending their title with a 10-7 victory over Canada.
