Uganda crushes New Zealand, guaranteed another Commonwealth medal

Uganda's 3x3 basketball team secured a spot on the medal table at this year's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow by defeating New Zealand 21-9 in the semifinals at the Scottish Event Campus Hall on Wednesday.

Jane Asinde and Mellisa Akullu each scored 8 points, helping Uganda make history in their first appearance at the games.

Asinde grabbed 6 rebounds and Akullu added 4, showcasing Uganda's dominance on both ends of the court.

The team converted 60 percent of their shots in the paint (12 out of 20) and made three of four from 2-point range (75 percent). Jamila Nansikombi contributed 2 points and 4 rebounds, while Perus Nyamwenge added 3 points and 2 drives.

Uganda also outrebounded New Zealand 15-11. For New Zealand, Sharne Pupuke-Robati scored 5 points and collected 5 rebounds. The Kiwis had been unbeaten until this match, while Uganda's only loss had come against Australia in the classification round.

With this victory, Uganda was guaranteed at least a silver medal and would face Australia, who beat Jamaica 21-8 in the other semifinal. After the Tonga game, Nansikombi told the press,

"It's absolutely huge. It's the semi-finals, but we still have to keep fighting. The fight is not over, and I know they're going to come out fighting as well, so we just have to keep the same energy up until the tournament is done." The final took place last night.

Earlier, in the quarterfinals, Uganda beat Tonga 21-12 by dominating a physical, fast-paced game. Jane Asinde led with 10 points and 6 rebounds, while Mellisa Akullu added 6 points and five offensive rebounds.

Jamila Nansikombi contributed 4 points and 6 defensive rebounds, helping Uganda reach the semifinal against New Zealand for a shot at the gold medal game. In the other quarterfinal, Jamaica narrowly defeated England 21-20 in a dramatic game that was decided in the final moments.

The Ugandan girls are now also assured of a hefty bonus from the government of Uganda, depending on which medal they bring home.
