Uganda Cranes captain Emmanuel Okwi has announced his retirement from international football, stating his desire to make way for the next generation of players.
The decision was confirmed through a heartfelt message on his social media platform, where Okwi reflected on his illustrious career and expressed gratitude to those who supported him along the way.
“Representing my country on the international stage has been a fulfilling dream come true. Wearing the Uganda Cranes jersey always brought a special feeling, and captaining our team was an absolute privilege and honor,” Okwi wrote.
He added, “An exciting new era for Ugandan football is on the horizon, with East Africa hosting the CHAN tournament later this August and the AFCON 2027 on the way. With many talented young players emerging, I believe it is time for me to step aside and pave the way for them. I will forever cherish the memories and the unwavering support from the fans.”
Okwi also extended his gratitude to his family, former coaches, and the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA). He specifically thanked Coach Bobby Williamson, who handed him his debut in 2009, as well as all the coaches he worked with during his career.
Since his debut, Okwi earned 95 caps for the national team and became Uganda’s all-time leading scorer in competitive matches with 22 goals, out of a total of 28. His standout performances at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, where he scored against DR Congo and Zimbabwe, solidified his status as a key player for the Cranes.
Following the retirement of Denis Onyango in 2021, Okwi took over the captaincy, leading the team with experience and composure. His final appearance for Uganda came during the 2023 AFCON qualifiers, marking the end of a remarkable international career.
Okwi’s retirement now opens the door for a new generation of Ugandan footballers to rise and make their mark on the international stage. His legacy as a dedicated captain and prolific scorer will undoubtedly inspire future stars of Ugandan football.
