The Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) has confirmed that Uganda is among the first four national teams set to take part in the 2025 CECAFA Women’s Senior Championship, scheduled for June 12 to 22 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
The tournament, also known as the Women’s Challenge Cup, is organised by the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) and brings together top women’s teams from the region. Alongside Uganda, hosts Tanzania, Burundi, and South Sudan have also confirmed their participation.
“So far, four nations including Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, and South Sudan have confirmed their participation, and more teams are expected to join soon,” the statement said.
The CECAFA Women’s Championship, also known as the Women’s Challenge Cup, is the leading tournament for women’s national teams in East and Central Africa, aimed at boosting women’s football in the area.
Yusuf Mossi, CECAFA’s Competitions Director, mentioned that the 2025 event is designed to help teams get ready for continental competitions.
“This tournament will be key for Tanzania as they represent the region at WAFCON,” Mossi noted.
He also said that this event gives other participating countries, including Uganda, a solid platform to prepare for the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026 qualifiers, starting in October.
Uganda will try to defend its title after winning the 2022 championship at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru, where the Crested Cranes beat Burundi 3–1 in the final, with goals from Sandra Nabweteme (2) and Fazila Ikwaput. Burundi's Joelle Bukuru scored the other goal.
After the women’s event, CECAFA will also host the first-ever Beach Soccer Championship in Mombasa, Kenya, from July 7 to 12, making for a busy schedule for CECAFA.
Other events on the 2025 CECAFA calendar include the CAF Women’s Champions League CECAFA qualifiers from September 3 to 19, the Dar Port Kagame Cup from September 13 to 27, and the AFCON U-17 CECAFA qualifiers from November 15–30 in Ethiopia. The African Schools Football Championship qualifiers will wrap up the year in December.
