Uganda collects 13th medal at Islamic Solidarity Games

Men’s 5000m Finals

Mohamed Ismail Ibrahim (Djibouti) – 13:46:12 (Gold)

Birhanu Balew (Bahrain) – 13:46:26 (Silver)

Samuel Simba Cherop (Uganda) – 13:46:45 (Bronze)

Eighteen-year-old Samuel Simba Cherop has secured Uganda’s thirteenth medal at the ongoing Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Cherop won bronze after finishing third in the men’s 5000m final this morning. He clocked 13:46:45, following Bahraini silver medallist Birhanu Balew, who finished in 13:46:26, while gold went to Djibouti’s Mohamed Ismail Ibrahim, who posted 13:46:12.

This is Cherop’s second medal at the sixth edition of the Islamic Solidarity Games, having earlier taken silver in the 10,000m race.

The Games will conclude on Friday with wrestling and para-powerlifting.

Roger Kizza Mukyeda (Manana) will be the final wrestler to compete after Veronica Ayo and Rebecca Israel Amongi’s bouts.

Dennis Mbaziira is set to compete in the para-powerlifting heavyweight category at the Boulevard 01B Sports Arena.

With a total of thirteen medals so far, this is Uganda’s strongest performance at the Islamic Solidarity Games since their inception in 2005.
