A 49-man Uganda team is in Rwanda to represent the country at the 8th Africa Aquatics Zone 3 swimming Championship at the Gahanga Swimming pool in Rwanda, November 23-25.
These include 9 Masters Swimmers that will as a team try to better their third place finish which they achieved last year in Tanzania
After training for some time at the Waves Fitness Harbour Kiwatule the team left with head coach Olivia Nalwadda promising that her charges would be fired up to put up a good show and return with medals and personal bests.
“We have taken a sufficient number that are all fit and capable of winning us medals. The team is positive and excited to represent so we expect the best from them,” Nalwadda said.
Apart from aiming to win medals the swimmers will also be looking forward to registering personal bests in the annual event for which Tanzania is the defending champion. Using home advantage Tanzania fielded many swimmers who amassed the most points to win the overall trophy.
But Uganda’s team captain Ben Kaganda believes Uganda will be up to the task.
“We should all be able to post some personal bests, we have been training for a while and I expect big things from many of these swimmers. We are going there to fight, we have to show the other countries that Ugandans can also compete,” Kaganda noted.
“We also have a big team that will compete in several events which means may points will be collected and we are hoping for the overall win,”
Last year 14-year-old female swimmer Tara Kisawuzi was the star for the Ugandans, winning 8 gold medals not only to win her category (13-14 years) but also helped Uganda in finishing third overall after they amassed 2,521.50 points.
Zara Mbanga, John Kafumbe and Charlotte Sanford were the other gold medalists with Heer Usadadiya, Nathan Nsereko, Natalie Lutalo, Kafumbe, Paloma Kirabo, and Tyaba Kiggundu picking silver medals over several races.
