Ucanda hails Nuba's move to NSW Swifts as inspiration to Ugandan Pplayers

Netball Uganda president Jocelyn Ucanda has welcomed Mary Nuba's move to Australia's NSW Swifts, describing the development as an inspiration to Ugandan players aspiring to build professional careers overseas.

Nuba, who is Uganda's only professional netball player, left Queensland Firebirds towards the end of last month after spending two seasons with the club. She has now joined the NSW Swifts, continuing her professional career in the Australian domestic league.

Ucanda believes Nuba's progress is a sign that Ugandan players can reach the highest level of the sport if they remain committed and disciplined.

"Mary staying professional is an inspiration to many netball players that they will one day be like her," Ucanda said.

She added that Netball Uganda is committed to creating opportunities for talented players to be identified and potentially recruited by international agents.

According to Ucanda, the federation is also focusing on developing more tall shooters, who she believes are increasingly valuable at the international level.

"What I have realized is that international cups love shooters and mostly the tall ones. So, what we are embarking on is looking for tall players and recruiting them into the national team," Ucanda said.

She explained that identifying and developing players with the physical attributes needed at the highest level will form part of the federation's efforts to strengthen Uganda's national team.

However, Ucanda cautioned aspiring players that talent alone is not enough to secure professional opportunities.

She urged players to remain disciplined both on and off the court, saying professionalism is essential for those hoping to attract international attention.

Nuba's move to NSW Swifts is another milestone in her growing international career and could provide further motivation for young Ugandan netballers seeking professional opportunities abroad.
