A March 2026 Vision Sport survey found that 91% of entertainment and sports enthusiasts in Kampala still vividly recall last year's corporate boxing clash between Shakib Cham Lutaaya and musician Rickman Manrick.
That bout, held at MTN Arena Lugogo on August 30, 2025, captured widespread attention and trended for nearly a month, with Rickman, real name Derrick Ddungu, securing a ferocious second-round knockout victory.
The same survey found that only 47% of the same people have heard or followed any combat sport event in the last eight years.
Of that 47%, 34% spoke of Moses Golola's three battles with rival Umar Semata in 2018, 2019, and their recent trilogy in 2024 at the Hamz Stadium official opening.
A handful mentioned notable moments such as Shadir Musa's second-round knockout of Uganda Police fighter Ivan 'Bornes Bornes' Magumba in 2022, as well as professional fights involving Yusuf Babu and Shafik Kiwanuka, plus the Uganda Boxing Champions League.
These figures suggest that while traditional boxing, the 'sweet science' continues to deliver authentic action, corporate boxing is rapidly gaining ground in terms of audience numbers, gate collections, arena atmosphere, and overall entertainment.
This Saturday, April 11, presents boxing fans in Uganda with a rare dilemma, as two high-profile fight nights are set to take place on the same day at different venues across the city.
At the International University of East Africa (IUEA) in Kansanga, socialite Zari Hassan's husband, Shakib Cham Lutaaya, will square off with Dubai-based Ugandan Timothy Sserunjogi, alias Barista Timo, in a corporate boxing showdown.
On the same night, attention will also turn to Uganda's Yusuf 'The Rolling Tiger' Babu versus Tanzania's Stephen Nyamhanga blockbuster at The Parliament Lounge in Nansana.
UBF in the Mix
Shakib's event also features two national team (The Bombers) trials, headlined by Farahat 'The Nightmare' Manirola and Nuhu 'Muzaata' Batte in a welterweight contest for this year's Commonwealth Games in Scotland.
The same event will see Shadir Musa and Isaac Zebra Ssenyange Jr. return to the ring.
The Uganda Boxing Federation's (UBF) decision to place the national team trials on a corporate boxing event rather than the Nansana event has been interpreted as taking sides and prioritising corporate boxing over real action.
"UBF's move to put national team trials at a celebrity fight over a serious boxing event is clear evidence of where their priority lies. It is a shame to the sport," former UBF Publicity and Vice President Fred Kavuma told Vision Sport.
Corporate Boxing: A Game Changer?
While there is a narrative that corporate boxing will have a negative impact on real boxing, UBF President Moses Muhangi sees it as a tool that will help the federation tap into the corporate audience the sport has lacked over the last 30 years.
Muhangi said: "Our vision is to change the mindset that boxing is only for ghetto folks or people struggling with life. We want to use corporate boxing to tap into the corporate audience and, of course, to expand our revenue.
"The truth is, the gate collections we have had during corporate fights are unrivalled. Our aim is to channel such resources to develop local talent."
Safety
Concerns about the safety of celebrity fighters have also been raised, but Muhangi insists strict guidelines are in place.
UBF has granted Top Boy Promotions exclusive rights to organise corporate boxing events, ensuring adherence to safety standards.
Participating celebrities undergo at least two months of structured training under professional coaches provided by UBF.
Mandatory medical check-ups, official weigh-ins, and supervision by certified personnel are enforced. Fighters are also equipped with heavier gloves (14–16 oz) to minimise impact, and the use of headgear is encouraged.
In previous corporate bouts, Sheila Gashumba's ex-boyfriends Rickman vs Grenade, then Rickman vs Shakib, and the Ebonies duo of Laura Ndagire vs Fauzia Najjemba, Top Boy Promotions ensured full medical coverage, including certified ringside doctors and standby ambulances.
