Teso Zone athletics team confident of medal haul at USSSA Championships

As the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Ball Games II and Athletics Championship gets underway from July 8 to 18, 2026, at Sacred Heart Girls' Secondary School, the Teso Zone athletics team is confident of winning several medals.

A 36-member athletes' squad, managed by Joseph Emagu, strongly believes the young boys and girls will make a historic podium finish by sweeping multiple medals.

Speaking to Vision Sport, Emagu shared his optimism about the team's determination to reclaim victory from West Nile, which has dominated the event for a while.

Solomon Omodi, head coach of the Teso Zone athletics team, said the athletes are ready to bring home both the boys' and girls' trophies.

"For now, the team is set for the national event. The boys and girls have received enough information on what is required as far as athletics is concerned," said Omodi.

USSSA Teso Zone chairperson John Robert Osuu said the athletes selected during the zonal qualifiers, held at Bishop Maraka College from June 24 to 28, have the ability to make Teso proud by winning medals.

"We have found it difficult to beat the West Nile Zone in athletics, but this time around we shall break their monopoly in Gulu," Osuu stated.

The Teso Zone athletics team finished in 7th position at the 2025 National Ball Games II and Athletics Championship hosted at Tororo College, with seven medals.

The championships will feature competitions in CAF African Schools Football U15 Boys and Girls, U17 Football, Volleyball (U20), Handball (U20), Netball (Girls U20), Basketball 3×3, Rugby Sevens (U20), Athletics, Cross Country, Woodball, Chess, Ludo, Lacrosse, Dance Sport, and Scrabble.

The event will also showcase demonstration sports, including Golf, Kabaddi, Kho Kho, Cricket, and Pickleball, reflecting USSSA's continued commitment to expanding sporting opportunities for learners across the country.
