With no clear start dates for the redevelopment, how long it will take, and the cost of the project, a few of the tenants in the premises have started vacating Lugogo Cricket Oval, a clear indicator that work will soon start.

A few weeks ago, the tenant in the gym was seen vacating the premises to pave way for redevelopment.

Summa, a Turkish firm was given the mandate to upgrade the facility into a modern sports centre last year.

The sports federations renting office spaces in the current complex were also given a timeline on when to leave the place for redevelopment to start.

Federations such as boxing, basketball, cricket, badminton, rugby, tennis, and others are some of the few that are set to vacate the premises.

Uganda Boxing Federation president Moses Muhangi believes the complex redevelopment will enable the federation to benefit from the modern facilities that will be put up.

“I believe a world-class gym, pool, and hostel being put in the new sports complex points to meeting the athletes' needs," Muhangi said.

The national teams won't be incurring extra accommodation costs since the complex will have two hostels which will house athletes preparing for games.

“We have been struggling to get a gym for our athletes to train for any upcoming events due to the limited facilities available," Muhangi stated.

There is also a load of equipment ranging from cricket containers, a hockey container, and some table tennis tables which will need to be relocated to enable the work to get underway.
